In the borderlands of autumn, where harvest fields meet the edge of the forest and the earth exhales its last warmth, a strange thing once grew among the pumpkins. It was larger than the rest, its skin warm to the touch, its weight impossibly human. When the farmer’s knife cut through the rind, the light of the hearth revealed not pulp and seed, but a child curled within the hollow. He was a son of gourd and magic.
By day, he lay still among the vines, a carved figure of vegetable flesh and an effigy of the soil that bore him. But when twilight bled the sky to ember and the first stars stitched their silver paths, the shell split open like a chrysalis; he emerged as a man, beautiful and melancholic, with eyes that held both the patience of roots and the fever of longing. The air around him smelled faintly of cinnamon and turned earth.
They say he wandered by candlelight until he found one who did not flinch from strangeness. Someone who met his gaze beneath the harvest moon and saw not a curse, but a lifetime of happiness. A dream of a love as sweet as spiced fruit that could cross the boundary between what grows and what breathes.
Love was his undoing and his salvation both, for envy took root and burnt hotter than devotion, and soon his hollow shell was set alight.
Yet fire cannot unmake what love has forged. When the smoke cleared, he rose again; he was no longer half and half, but whole. The curse undone, the man and the magic now one. And still, when dusk turns the fields to gold, the air thick with spice and fading warmth, it is said he lingers there.
Even now, the air tastes of what was promised. Some vows outlast their season.
“Pumpkin Spouse” draws on the Romanian tale of Trandafiru and the broader Animal Bridegroom motif found across European folklore, in which princes are cursed into beast, object, or vegetable form – redeemable only through love that sees beyond appearances.
Trandafiru is unusual in that the curse makes him a gourd rather than an animal, tying the story to harvest rituals and autumn’s liminal magic, when life and death intertwine.
In Romanian tradition, pumpkins are threshold symbols -neither fruit nor vegetable, earthbound nor ethereal- vessels that can be hollowed and transformed.
Our candle honours this Halloween classic scent by drawing on this tale, elevating both the sweetness of devotion and the darker magic of transformation. Its spiced pumpkin and autumnal fruit fragrance, threaded with a very subtle smokiness and amber designed to mirror that duality: warmth concealing mystery, love flickering within a hollowed heart.

What Our Clients Say
FAQs
Every candle has its own character, and caring for it brings out the best of its story. Below you will find answers to the questions we are asked most often, including how to burn your candle safely and how to help each fragrance unfold exactly as intended.
How should I care for my candle?
For the best burn, trim the wick to around 3 millimetres before each use. Allow the first burn to reach the edges of the jar to prevent tunnelling. Keep the candle away from drafts and never leave it unattended while lit.
Are your candles made to order?
All candles are hand-poured in small batches to maintain quality and consistency. During busy seasons, some scents may be poured to order so every piece arrives as fresh as possible.
