In the borderlands of autumn, where harvest fields meet the edge of the forest and the earth exhales its last warmth, a strange thing once grew among the pumpkins. By day, he lay still among the vines, a carved figure of vegetable flesh and an effigy of the soil that bore him. But when twilight bled the sky to ember and the first stars stitched their silver paths, the shell split open like a chrysalis; he emerged as a man, beautiful and melancholic, with eyes that held both the patience of roots and the fever of longing. The air around him smelled faintly of cinnamon and turned earth.

They say he wandered by candlelight until he found one who did not flinch from strangeness. Someone who met his gaze beneath the harvest moon and saw not a curse, but a lifetime of happiness. A dream of a love as sweet as spiced fruit that could cross the boundary between what grows and what breathes.

Love was his undoing and his salvation both, for envy took root and burnt hotter than devotion, and soon his hollow shell was set alight.
