Across the windswept moors, where heather blankets rolling hills in shades of purple and green, the landscape breathes with the memory of numerous storms. Here, where mist rises from peat bogs that have held their silence for millennia, something ancient walks the old paths.

At the heart of this wild country stands a cemetery, older than any seen elsewhere. Beyond the rusted iron gates, gravestones are peppered among the wet grass, surrounding an imposing mausoleum. Their surfaces, some smoothed by centuries of weather and countless seasons, some covered in silver-green moss that seems to pulse with a faint luminescence, obscuring the names of those who rest here, and some carved with symbols that shift and change in the uncertain light.

The air grows thick with the perfume of things long buried. The scent of sacred flames rises from the very earth, remnants of frankincense and myrrh ritualistically left behind mix with the sharp sweetness of crushed berries, as if the graveyard itself bleeds its secrets into the night.

You feel as though your eyes are playing tricks on you as movement flickers in your peripheral. But they are not deceiving you, as from the shadows between the ancient tombs emerges the Black Shuck. Larger than any earthly hound, his form seems to shift and flow like smoke given substance. His fur is so black it seems to absorb light rather than reflect it, creating a void in the shape of a creature.

Despite his massive size, this legendary guardian moves with dignity and purpose. His ember-bright eyes hold the blazing menace of old tales; the one who has served as protector of the lost, gatekeeper of thresholds between worlds. This great hound teaches that darkness is not always the enemy. Sometimes it is the truths that are too profound for daylight’s scrutiny. So, feel guided by this ghostly groundskeeper, whose sacred work can only be done in shadow.

The Black Shuck is one of England’s most enduring supernatural legends, with sightings recorded across East Anglia for over 500 years.

The name “Shuck” likely derives from the Old English “scucca,” meaning demon or fiend. However, many encounters describe the creature as having a protective rather than malevolent presence.

The most famous sighting occurred in 1577 at Bungay Church in Suffolk, where a massive black dog was said to have appeared during a violent thunderstorm. Rather than bringing doom, some locals believed the creature was trying to warn them of danger.

Our Black Shuck reimagines this legendary guardian as a guide for shadow work which is the psychological practice of integrating rejected aspects of the self.

The complex scent profile of berries, incense, and woodland reflects the creature’s role as protector of the liminal spaces where healing happens. In darkness, we often find our greatest light.
